Pros

It's government work. The pros are pretty easily identifiable: stability of position and work, low impact low stress, 42.5 hour work week, ability to work from home.

Cons

It's government work. There is little room for movement unless you're willing to change departments. Compensation is solely based on tenure and not performance. And you have to work around people who are rarely motivated to do anything beyond what they are specifically directed to do.

Pros

The state has good medical benefits. That's about it.

Cons

Too many employees that are ok with only doing the bare minimum. The state's compensation rates are too low compared to equivalent private sector jobs. Lots of promises made to employees to make more money, but the pay is still ridiculously low. I have worked at a couple State buildings and they are all the same. A lot of people in higher level hjob positions that they are under-qualified to be in. Nepotism and the good ole boy system is still in effect.

Pros

Great people... for the most part.

Cons

Management is content with the status quo and afraid of change or innovation. No real incentive to go above and beyond. Those that do are not rewarded. Those that do the minimum still have job security. "Good Old Boy" network is strong here. Its all about who you know.
