Pros

Working with the college students and parents. Love the Christmas paid time off for 1-2 weeks. Great knowledge of the complicated financial aid process.

Cons

Management all the way up to Administration is very cut throat and non-family oriented. Employees in this office who having young children is not good because they won't get promoted in this office. Human Resources and equity & access office work for the University and are not there to help you and stop discrimination or retaliation. They are only looking out for themselves and their careers to be one of the hundreds of VP's within the University. Curious on how many local Hispanics work for the university and how many are hired from other states. Also, how many Hispanics are in management positions, since they claim to be a Hispanic serving school. Note, they like to serve low income Hispanics because they receive federal grants and state grants which go directly to tuition and the school. Would never want to attend this school and give them a penny.

In general, Texas State University is a great place to work. The benefits are excellent; healthcare is covered, they have tuition reimbursement, employees are automatically included in the Teacher Retirement system, there are lots of free training opportunities, and discounts available for certain retailers. Everyone who works here has a sense of absolute job security, no one ever seems to get fired or laid off. The campus generally has a very pleasant atmosphere, there are decent food options on campus, and plenty of great food choices just off campus. It can also be really nice to work along side students, they have so much energy and they can help to prevent you from getting too out of touch as you grow older. In my particular office - and this can vary greatly depending on which office you work in - we all have a good amount of autonomy. There is a very amicable dynamic between my coworkers, we all have easy access to food and coffee throughout the day, no one ever seems too miserable.

Cons

Change is slow at such a large, public institution. The opportunities for advancing your career are rare to the extent of being non-existent for most employees. If there is a certain policy that doesn't work, or a coworker who doesn't do their part, or something else that seems like it should change, you will have to learn to live with it because almost nothing ever changes. The pay for just about every job title is noticeably lower than what it would be in the private sector, and there are no periodic opportunities for pay raises, just a cost-of-living increase that adds about 2% to your paycheck each year if you have been performing well enough at your job.
