Pros

The Broad Institute is a great place to work as it's doing cutting edge science and is really trying to research the genetic basis of disease for better diagnosis and cures.

Cons

The environment is not nourishing if you are not in the Harvard/MIT community or if you are a non-scientist. People are given a lot of responsibility with little guidance and no authority/ empowerment. Administration teams are not well organized and there is little cross talk between the groups. There is little strategic vision and long term planning.

The Broad Institute Response

Hi, this is Chelsea from Human Resources. It’s great to see that you appreciate the effort the Broad is making to revolutionize biomedical research - It is one of the reasons I get excited to come to work everyday! The science being done at the Broad is cutting edge, and the administrative and Project Management teams are essential to its success. Our teams have been growing at a rapid pace, and there are challenges that arise with that growth. To address this, the HR Team has added a Learning and Development division dedicated to providing the Broadie community with additional resources. We have invested substantially in developing our managers from a new manager series that runs twice a year to programming focused on individuals and teams. I would be happy to discuss any additional ideas you may have. Feel free to reach out to me at cbodenstab@broadinstitute.org.

Pros

Great scientific resources, and the brain-power in that building is formidable. Culture was very tight for the first few years. The massive growth of the organization may have helped many aspects of the scientific purpose of the Broad, but it destroyed the culture.

Cons

Director-level management and above are constantly in political battles with each other. Always looking for the next big thing, but not following through on the one's they've invested in (with much fanfare) previously. Focused attention to the mission of bringing the power of genomics to MEDICINE stops at the publication of significant results. All innovation, not as much application.

Pros

Decent base salary, good resume builder, excellent health benefits, good food and parties

Cons

Little room for growth unless you know someone, HR friendly on outside, but not very helpful with difficult situations, shift from science to business management altered the unique culture
