Pros

Benefits, Work-Life Flexibility, Good place to start a career.

Cons

Promotions are not merit based, but rather based on how well one can suck up to their manager. There is a lack of recognition of talented individuals. Too easy to become comfortable and trapped in a rut. Since this is a non-profit, the pay is poor.

Pros

It is a very laid back atmosphere, but at the same time people that want to get ahead and learn have opportunities to do so. The job is much more flexible in comparison to some other jobs in biotech, and management is very understanding. They are very good about letting people do what they are most interested in, within reason. They do have trainings though where employees can learn new statistical programs and such, which is good.

Cons

Some days can be a little slow and the work often tends to be repetitive. You might be able to learn more working in a more academic setting, but it depends on what you are looking for exactly. There are some opportunities for advancement, but you can also end up working as a technician for several years doing the same thing over and over again. Some of the employees that I have encountered are not extremely motivated and don't work a lot. On the other hand, some other people are brilliant and work extremely hard, so it can be a mix. Finally, since the Institute is still growing substantially, organization is not the greatest at this moment. It can be frustrating to navigate the surroundings since they change often.

Pros

The people here are the best at what they do, and you get to learn from them every day. The work environment is socially relaxed and informal, if scientifically intense. Opportunities to make professional contacts in the Boston area are excellent, and the institute hosts many interesting seminars.

Cons

There could be more collaboration and communication between groups, especially if they see one another as competitors. This gets in the way of science.
