Pros

Incredible benefits and work-life balance support. They hired me 7 months pregnant, gave me flexible hours to start and upon returning from paid 3-month maternity leave.

Cons

Often difficult to get administrative projects approved and moving forward.

Pros

Lots of smart, passionate coworkers. Lots of opportunities to contribute to high-profile science. Exposure and access to new technologies before they hit the market. Good facilities and location.

Cons

Increasingly fragmented community due to internal competition between labs and platforms. Size of grants and frequency of publications more important than quality of science. Limited career development for non-academic staff.

Pros

At the cutting edge of science. Equipped with nearly any resource you can think of to pursue your research aims. If not, surely someone in the vast Boston academic community will collaborate with you. Excellent benefits and perks. Great support staff (HR, immigration) for navigating the employment process.

Cons

As others have mentioned, a junior researcher can easily get swallowed up at the Broad. The organization's ethos of collaboration can lead one to be over-ambitious and thus over-stretched.
