Pros

- smart people - incredible resources - culture of excellence - very good regular meetings and conferences

Cons

- emphasis on "big science" can be daunting - have to be assertive to succeed - projects tend to be huge there, so be prepared mentally - sometimes it feels like science is being done for coolness' sake over and above utility

Pros

It is fantastic to be surrounded by brilliant and dedicated colleagues working at the cutting-edge of technology on the most important biomedical problems of our time. Scientists here are highly motivated.

Cons

I really can't think of any downsides - salaries here are lower than what you would get at a biotech or pharma company, but the freedom and self-direction of the research, without regard to the bottom line of producing marketable drugs, is worth it.
