Pros

There are a lot of 'toys' and equipment here. I've had a lot of experiences with disparate biology and technologies. There are also some departments that are thriving.

Cons

In my particular department, there have been many layoffs, a ridiculous reorganization, and lack of support. Loss of grant(s) have caused a significant downsizing in staff. Unfortunately, there has not been a similar downsizing in the scope of projects or equipment required. With no money, the result is a lot of broken (sad) equipment without service contracts and a very overworked staff with no guidance, oversight, support, or working resources. Morale is exceedingly low and people are actively fleeing.

Pros

smart colleagues, doing work that matters, excellent PTO, excellent retirement match up to 6% + 3% bonus, reputation of the institute

Cons

collaborative only for people at the top, innovation discouraged if not in leadership role, career progression stalls for most people and it's hard to find out why, pretty territorial and political

Hi, this is Chelsea from Human Resources. We are always looking for feedback regarding the benefits offered to our Broadies, and I’m happy to see that you are enjoying them! Regarding your feedback on career progression I want to tell you about a new program called Empowering Your Career that our HR People Development group offers that could help. As part of the program you identify your core strengths, talents and an overarching career goal and develop a plan to achieve it. You also build a network of peers and find out about opportunities and potential paths that may exist for you. Collaboration and innovation are key to the mission of Broad, so I would like to connect with you to discuss where you may be hitting some roadblocks. You can reach out to me at cbodenstab@broadinstitute.org to discuss further.

Pros

Access an great technologies and lots of innovative scientific ideas. A good way to expose yourself to cutting edge science

Cons

Poor Career Development with little to no room for growth. Very little effort in team building and incentives or motivation to stay. The favoritism and questionable ethics has led to a very toxic and a devastating place to work. Poor support on projects with very ambitious goals also makes it challenging to be successful.
