Pros

Work towards a meaningful mission with talented, intelligent, interesting, and hard-working co-workers and volunteers. Room for advancement and strong professional development opportunities, lots of on the job learning resources. Good pay and benefits for an environmental non-profit. Great work environment.

Cons

Pay not competitive with for-profit work, working for a mission you believe in can make it challenging to find your work life balance depending on the individual.

Pros

Growth and promotions depend on your supervisor and whether or not you are liked.

Cons

Management is ever changing and team leaders lack expertise and backbone to communicate to the reality of expectations, thus producing stress and decreased morale to staff.

It gets better the closer you get to the land . . .

Pros

Inspirational mission Mission-oriented, dedicated staff Thinks globally, acts locally Many highly decentralized operating units Flexible work environment Best field visits ever

Cons

Sometimes the HQ Executive Leadership gets enthralled by the latest buzz, and moves out ahead of the organization - burdening it with layers of costs - without resulting in any tangible benefits, before getting enthralled by the next shiny object. These Exec folks are not as dyed in the values as the local on the ground staff, since they sometimes work at TNC because that's the only job they could land in the beltway. TNC definitely gets better the closer you get to the land in the field offices . . .
