Small Company with Big Company Aspirations

Pros

Good company with high aspirations of being great. Admirable values and dedication to community. Opportunity to work with them brings an opportunity to do real work to change the industry in a good way, but change has to start within their walls first.

Cons

They talk the talk, but don't often walk the walk. Community outreach is a value they have but their everyday actions don't reflect this. Seems like they only do community service when/if they can get PR out of it. Community outreach is is more about money and less about doing. Rarely give true thanks to the employees or that support their efforts. Hard work is expected but not often appreciated. People who've been with the company awhile are and not often welcoming to the new folks or their new approaches. They make an effort to let you know that you're an outsider.

Wish I could have stayed

Pros

The company is very personable, you see senior leadership frequently and they know who you are and what you do. They care about their image, community representation, and their people. The work is spread out between several different businesses and you get some exposure to the other businesses. It's hard work, challenging, and high stress but the company is rewarding in salary, 401K, and profit share. The company has put programs in place to develop talent but needs improvement.

Cons

I would have loved to stay with the company and was angling to do so but I was part of a business sale The Wills Group made. Unfortunately, that agreement does not allow me to return for a certain period of time. Some cons....stabilize some of the departments. HR is a rotating door and it may be because they hire the wrong people. Because of that, some managers have not had proper management training or don't know the impact of their management on their employees. The company has a talent development program in place but limped to the finish line and still seems incomplete. Hopefully they can find someone to champion that effort long term. Invest more effort into how to accomplish the big ideas instead of merely thinking of the big ideas. Sometimes, everyone gets in the "big idea" mode and little thought is placed into execution. Depending on what part of the business you're in, sometimes you don't have a work/life balance. And it comes down to time of year, type of work, or impression/expectation given off by others.

Great Place to Grow a Career

Pros

If you are looking to grow a career, look no further! While the company is locally based, family run company, there are a number of similarities to that of a large public company. The company truly cares for employees, customers, and the communities that it serves. This is a great place to grow a career, with ample opportunities to learn and grow. The company offers a fantastic tuition reimbursement program, and 401K. If you are coming from DC or NOVA, the reverse commute is wonderful. The people that work for the company are full of passion and leadership. If you are someone who likes challenges, applying yourself, and hard work, this organization will be a match for you and your future career.

Cons

You need to be real go getter, to make in this organization. Everyone here is working toward a shared and common goal, you need to be prepared to work in a team environment to be successful in the organization. If you are looking to just push the time clock, this is not the place for you.
