Pros

Benefits, experience, teamwork, amazing supervision, training, seeing change happen, working with families, continuity of care. 3 years ago today I got a call and accepted a position that I was completely and utterly afraid of but that I can now say has saved and changed my life. The work I have done on myself and my family along side teens having to face those same fears and heal has been the most extraordinary thing to witness and go through. The universe gave me this wonderful gift and I am forever grateful for that. My coworkers are my family and they truly see me. Something I’ve wanted my entire life. Cannot believe it’s been 3 years... excited to see what the future holds. Those who have struggled working at Third way are not able to look at the parallel process and that in helping these teens you are also helping yourself. This job is hard work and takes commitment but it’s the best clinical experience I have ever had. The company treats their employees with respect and the work you put in you also receive. Thirdway is a residential facility that truly looks at the whole picture. They are a hands off facility and don’t just look at the behaviors of the residents but actually do the therapy around why nothing has worked for these kids and why they keep acting out. Everyone is motivated to help these kids seek justice and it’s amazing process to be a part of.

Cons

Working with the most at risk youth is challenging and takes a lot of commitment and dedication

Pros

Third Way Center teaches you about yourself. Which is, in my opinion essential when working with emotionally disturbed adolescents and their families. Residential treatment is intense, and if you don't mind looking at yourself (and it is painful) there is only expertise to gain; expertise about working with kids and about yourself as a therapist. It doesn't seem to matter how much a potential therapist or mental health counselor is warned, they don't know what they have gotten into until they are in it. I believe once you have worked at Third Way Center, and put in your time to learn (not leave when it gets hard, or blame everyone else for how inadequate you feel) you will have the skills to do anything. I, personally have felt very fortunate to continue learning and growing as a therapist. I have learned so much more from the kids and families at Third Way Center than I ever could have imagined. And I have to give credit to my team mates, and supervisors throughout the years who have not let me off the hook and have forced me to look at myself and do the work that is necessary to benefit the clients at Third Way Center.

Cons

It is hard work. The kids live there, so essentially the job never really stops, but I think that is because it is my career and not just a job. The key is to have a great team where everyone is accountable and cares. Makes the job easier, but it is not just a job.

Pros

Really good experience and exposure to at-risk youth. Enjoyed the kids and learning more about residential health setting. Great experience for beginner level therapist. CEO has an interesting way of doing things but it fit the values of Third Way. I enjoyed the supervision. Higher ups are controlling a lot and seem to be trying their best to handle some of the sickest kids in the Denver Metro area.

Cons

Hours for a therapist are not ideal. Very hard to maintain a work/life balance. I never left on time and was not offered additional pay for staying late. It is just expected due to the high amount crisis and high workload. Super difficult job. Definitely not for everyone.
