Pros

The pay is decent and equipment is good.

Cons

Recently the County has been hacking away at the benefits and every contract cycle is now contentious and a battle. Staffing was horrible the entire time I worked there. I felt very unsafe especially working night shift. The Administration changed to a horrible micro-management policy model that seemed more interested in punishing employees rather than recognizing their contributions and achievements. The board of commissioners is completely unsupportive and have questionable priorities about public safety and even ignore surveys of the residents that put safety at the highest importance for living in the county. I would not recommend working for the county government at this time until the board and the administration get replaced with reasonable, grounded people.

Pros

Benefits and Co-workers are pretty great. Everyone in other offices and departments are very willing to help you succeed. Depending on the position your schedule can be pretty flexible.

Cons

Disorganized and chaotic work environment, at least for one specific department. Definitely ask questions about the culture before agreeing to an offer of employment. Be careful who you vent to.

Pros

- Opportunity to learn a lot of different skills. - People tend to be generally helpful. - Professional development opportunities related to job classification. - Networking opportunities. - Benefits (medical, dental, 401k, deferred compensation, etc.) are great. - Telework opportunities depending on the division.

Cons

- An echo chamber because of the lack of diversity. - There isn't any training. You're expected to learn on the job with no real time for training. - No opportunities to move up. It's based on who you know, and they put a lot of stock in the stereotypical "show up dressed for the job you want," despite there being several niche professionals who work in the field the majority of the time. - Management and exempt earn bonuses; non-exempt (hourly) employees do not. - Toxic work culture from upper management. - Because the professional development is based on your job classification, it's challenging if you are trying to learn new skills to move up or transfer. - There isn't consistency between divisions. Depending on your manager, you either get a lot of freedom or none.
