Pros

Benefits are decent. Main HQ location is great. The product itself is easy to believe in as it is truly a great product. Free beer.

Cons

Oh boy, where to begin... For starters, the culture is absolutely toxic. People are not accepting of others with contrasting opinions. If you don't fit the consensus, you're an outcast. Multiple times I've overheard racist, sexist, etc conversations taking place in the elevators and common areas of the office. I've raised issues with this and received no support from my managers, occasionally being told that I need to just bite the bullet and apologize for disagreeing. Work-life balance sucks. Everyone talks a big game about it, but when it comes down to it, people are regularly working late at night, on weekends, and while on vacation. An unlimited vacation policy is useless when you work during the vacation (personally I think "unlimited" vacation policies are an intrinsic evil, but not everyone agrees). My base salary is fine (though not extraordinary) in my opinion, but there are no bonuses, equity, or other monetary benefits beyond base salary available. I've heard many others complain about poor pay at Toast. I don't know if they are upset about salary or the lack of additional benefits. By far the worst thing about working at Toast, though, is that the leadership does not seem to care about the employees. There was an issue with air quality in the office due to an ongoing remodel. It took 2 weeks of employees complaining of headaches, nausea, and other symptoms, and an employee purchasing an air quality monitor out of their own pocket to get readings (which was subsequently confiscated without a reasonable explanation), before anything was done. What was done was to close the floor and move everyone off-site, but not before making it explicitly clear to everyone not closely involved already that, in leadership's opinion, there was no danger and the move was being done mainly as a result of the complaining, as opposed to out of concern for employee safety. There was a clear adversarial relationship between the employees affected by the air quality issues and the workplace experience team that was supposed to be mitigating it. Note: I left the company voluntarily and was NOT part of the recent COVID-19 layoffs.

This was an incredibly upsetting review and certainly not the type of experience that we want for any Toaster. You've raised several concerns and I'd welcome the opportunity for us to connect and chat further. While we are far from perfect at Toast, I can say with 100% confidence that our leadership team cares tremendously about our people. At Toast, our values are at the core of everything we do. We’re one team - and our culture and values are built around providing an inclusive, open and safe environment for all. We tolerate nothing less. Again, while your feedback is tough to read, it helps us to understand where we can improve and where we missed the mark with your experience. I’d love to chat about these examples, please take me up on the offer for an additional conversation and shoot me a note to set up time. - Chris Comparato, CEO

Pros

Benefits and pay were decent The product is really cool

Cons

- It's chaos, and most of the leadership is out of touch with the boots-on-the-ground issues. - There is too much happening, and they need to work on connected prioritization, not just the most critical work. There are significant issues with data and connectivity, and that makes working on major projects impossible. - VPs and SVPs have no clue what they are doing and put all their insecurities on their staff. They want yes people and do not go asking questions. VPs and SVPs are very self-serving, and there is a ton of fighting. - Many of the customers are left helpless after onboarding and sales over promises. These are very terrible situations to put customers in. - The care department has to field all those concerns, yet the company does not connect all the dots along the whole customer journey. - Everything is managed in PowerPoint decks, which makes cross-function collaboration awful

Dream job, dream company

Pros

Truly can't say enough good things about this company. What a breath of fresh air it is to have found a place where you can believe in the product, love who you work with, and love your job. The perks/benefits are awesome - free breakfast and snacks everyday, beer fridge and tap, regular outings and events, unlimited time off - the list goes on. Work-wise, I've never found a more transparent, honest, and "no ego" group of leaders at a corporate company. It truly defies the norms. Coming from a job where bosses were there to intimidate and demand, Toast was quite a culture shock when I found the exact opposite. Managers sole purpose is to help you grow your career. The culture and environment is excellent. Everyone is happy to be here, and gives their all everyday - not because they are forced to, but because they believe in this company's mission and the product we sell. It's truly something to get behind. I love my job and who I do it for - I never thought I'd find that!

Cons

No real cons. Things are changing all the time, but that's not a negative for me - it just shows the company is still agile and flexible to improve operations, so that we can continue to grow.
