Pros

Troy is actively trying to expand their all courses to an online environment.

Cons

Recent changes in management have changed the culture of Troy. Before, it used to be a pro-academic format, worrying about course content and providing the best courses available. Now it is more about quantity than quality. With recent changes they have lost all but one qualified Instructional Designers. The one remaining is qualified only in a limited field, but that one is now handling over 200 courses. They remaining people filling the jobs do not have the required education, a Masters degree, nor are they in the process of getting it. They seem to feel that anyone can do the job and that employees are the least important resource available. They feel that they will be able to replace skilled employees with anyone at anytime. They use non-existent "secret" policies to bully employees and regularly threaten employees for taking vacation, taking sick days and using the Federally mandated Family Medical Leave Act. HR is simply a rubber stamp with no concern for employees. Their reputation is known throughout the state of Alabama.. This once was a good place to work, but no more. Less concern about having the job done right and more concern about quantity of "butts in the seats" both online and on-campus.

Pros

I was very happy to be able to teach, what little I could. They gave me this opportunity to keep teaching on my resume while working another full-time job.

Cons

do not do a good job recruiting students for live classes. They will assign you, classes, to teach and then sometimes you don't know until the day of if the class is going to make. This would not be a problem but at this point, you have picked out a book, made a syllabus... planned to teach the entire term- with no compensation. In the interim, when you are not teaching, they want you available to answer emails about the course you are going to teach only to the Troy email system and become perturbed when you do not respond in a timely manner (to an email system you probably are not checking since you are not currently working). The caliber of students is also concerning, many of them do not have the basic skills necessary to take even the introductory course that I teach, much less the more advanced ones in the discipline.

Why does enrollment decline?

Pros

steady paycheck and not overly compensated

Cons

Enrollment declines because students are not happy, faculty are not happy, and staff works non-stop reinventing the wheel. Disconnect between top management and the working force. A culture of Us and Them . Admin needs to listen to the workers on the front lines who can offer "fixes" for problems. Over the past five years, the Admin is becoming more Troy-Centric and has lost the vision of a global reach. A power play for CONTROL is evident on the Troy Campus....it is not an efficient way to operate. The morale of the workers is in the pits - the management doesn't care and that is what is so sad. The Admin doesn't want to know any BAD news so they continue to operate as Pollyanna.....very sad situation. Good people leave every month and no one ever asks why ....this institution is a train wreck.
