Pros

"You can do that here" was the theme of the new associate workshop held in Washington, DC attended by new GSA associates from all over the country representing several business lines. I have a wide background in commercial real estate and hadn't previously found a place that would allow me to both use several of my skill areas and allow me to learn new ones.

Cons

Being a Federal Agency, GSA can't offer some perks of private organizations. As a commercial property manager, vendors took me to nice lunches and Braves baseball games frequently. Also, our legal staff just gave the management team a brief on why we can't purchase snacks for training courses or hold 'off site' retreats.

Pros

Great work/life balance. Agency embraces telework, alternative work schedules, mobile technology. Tremendous opportunities for newer employees to take on high amounts of responsibility. GSA is at the intersection of many different areas of government which can make working at the agency interesting, albeit complicated.

Cons

A Federal agency with a high amount of bureaucracy that can infiltrate daily decision-making. Continual changes in senior leadership every few years results in continual analysis and sometimes needless reinvention of agency wide processes.

Pros

Great work-life balance and the majority of employees are dedicated to do the best they know how.

Cons

Not as in tune with private-sector business principles as one would hope.
