Pros

The people whose jobs are directly in service of the underrepresented tend to be good but having to run to them every time to get even a simple form taken care is soul-crushing.

Cons

Davis people see themselves as righteous and progressive but are blind to their own privilege. They 'tsk' at anyone not exactly like them. There's a ton of subtle racism, sexism, and friction against the underrepresented. It's pretty soul-crushing to constantly have your emails and phone calls never returned when you're just trying to follow policy and do your job, all the while watching the people of the 'right' groups get responses. Try to talk to anyone about it and their response is always about how progressive they are. They will NOT admit they have a problem. Meanwhile I've been the target of ethnic slurs repeatedly.

Pros

Pay is quite low compared to private sector but benefits and very stable employment make up for that. Very relaxed work environment maybe even a little to relaxed sometimes.

Cons

A lot of entitlement and complacency from the 10+ year employees. It depends on your department but if your a shift worker your department may not ever rotate shifts so the one your hired for is the one your stuck on. Not a ton of opportunities to advance due to many 20+ year employees staying in the same positions.

Pros

Working at UC Davis, I've found you get out what you put in — it can be a great place to learn new technologies and implement industry best practices if you take the initiative to make it happen. There are constantly new projects to work on and you can be sure these projects have an impact as UC Davis is often involved with cutting-edge research that improve quality of life around the world.

Cons

It's incredibly difficult getting promotions or re-classed. Bureaucracy is rampant — projects often take much longer than you would expect anywhere else in the industry. Also, expect to be paid much less than elsewhere in the industry, although benefits are great especially if you have a family.
