      Inconsistent, but effective

      Pros

      Benefits allowed me to graduate with my doctorate without any debt and enough money to pay for necessities with a little left over. I feel like I have learned valuable skills that make me more marketable for jobs and made useful connections with professors.

      Cons

      The amount of work that a TA contract requires is highly variable between classes. In many, you are asked to work more than your contract is supposed to allow. While there is a strong union in place to settle disputes, it is clear that there is an exploitation of early-career scholars that rely heavily on the connections and good graces of the instructors they work with for long-term career success.

      Great health benefits, union contract, covers tuition, get experience in many fields, get relevant experience to your research.

      Cons

      Experience absolutely depends on the department. In some you will be badly overworked, in others it will be a good professional job.
