Working as a field tech here feels like you're the ugly stepsister of the family.
Pros
Friendly coworkers. Outdoors nearly all the time. Work whatever hours you want, whatever days of the week you want, as long as there's daylight. Independent work, you might go weeks without seeing another UDC employee. Health insurance is pretty good here.
Cons
Upper management seems out of touch and directionless. Already underpaid field techs get little to no opportunity to advance or improve their pay. PTO accrual is pitiful. Company equipment (notably the provided vehicles) is hilariously inadequate, especially in areas with bad terrain. Recent company business has caused a round of layoffs in California and no holiday bonuses, which does not bode well in my opinion. Flexibility of your hours is a double edged-sword; weeks with bad weather may have you working on weekends or days you wanted off, unless you dip into your PTO.
