Pros

A teaching hospital where learning is valued gives every employee the opportunity to expand their knowledge if they so desire. Shands takes on the complex cases no one else in the region can handle so although the patient acuity is high making care difficult, you will see really cool and unique things you just wouldn't see at a private hospital.

Cons

Well, where to begin...you are a dime a dozen and there is a policy of considering everyone to be equal and replaceable. This promotes mediocrity. The only reason to try harder, be better and know more is your own person pride, you will NOT be more highly valued or paid than others and you will be disappointed to see coworkers who are borderline morons being treated and paid the same as you! As with any large hospital it's a level of bureaucracy matched only by the federal government.

Pros

Shands is a very well respected academic hospital with a variety of highly ranked areas of medical care. In general it is a very good place to work and live.

Cons

Gainesville, Florida is a small college town (this could be a pro), but in general the town can get a little boring unless you just want to settle down with your family.

Pros

I really enjoyed my coworkers, both within the department and throughout the company. The vast majority of the senior leadership was wonderful and inspiring to work for and seemed dedicated to making Shands a great place to work. I was proud to work for a not-for-profit healthcare system that provided such amazing patient care.

Cons

Work hours were often long in comparison to the salary. As with any healthcare environment, not every patient story has a happy ending, which I found emotionally difficult sometimes. Also, there wasn't a lot of upward mobility within our department.
