Pros

Good job for someone in college after hours. Can be very tough physically at times. It is very demanding on the body, especially if you work in the freezer warehouse where it is -30*F.

Cons

Supervisors can be overbearing. It can be like a typical union shop at times, with friction between the union workers and the supervisors.

Pros

Work life balance similar to other retail companies.

Cons

SUPERVALU is not the market leader and not a well known brand name in retail. There seems to be no "grand vision" that will take SVU to the next level. Many people who are at the Director level at SUPERVALU would not be in the same position at other FORTUNE 500 companies. The hiring process is very weak and does not recruit top talent like some other retailers in the city - Target and Best Buy. This leads to a weak leadership who are unable to make proactive and effective decisions. Some pf the people who really understood grocery retail have left the company recently. Silos hamper effective collaboration. Unbelievably, there are plenty of silos within marketing, which is traditionally not as fragmented in other companies. Hiring weak leaders who believe in building cliques has led to this state. Merchandising function is nowhere as strong as it should be for a retailer and is also affected by weak leadership and silos.

Pros

Great company for professional development and opportunities for career growth, especially if you are willing to relocate. Save-a-lot side of the business is target as it's growth agent.

Cons

Company has large debt load and is in transition to discover what it wants to be moving forward. Current focus is on Save-a-lot sector which could have negative impact on retail and wholesale sectors.
