The Professional Staff Nurse at UPMC: THIS JOB IS NOT RECOMMENDED
Pros
My coworkers were friendly and worked hard. The physicians were exceptional.
Cons
Frustrating work environment. High turnover. Endless list of job responsibilities. Significantly understaffed. No formal training provided. Everyone else working also overwhelmed most of the time. Poor management. Supervisor had absolutely NO UNDERSTANDING of nursing. Supevisor couldn’t help and often disregarded needs. Everyone treated as expendable. If you do a good job, you are “rewarded” with more work. If something goes wrong, you are thrown under the bus. Significantly underpaid. Employees working in Pittsburgh are charged for parking. If you work at Children’s Hospital, you pay to park in an off-campus lot and then you must take a twenty-minute shuttle bus ride to get to the hospital. Your time is not valued. The focus of UPMC is on the “brand image” instead of what is truly important in healthcare: providing the best care. And you can’t do that without good employees.
