Pros

Very, very nice co-workers who are sympathetic, getting paid to work out. Everyone who works there has started out as a package handler. Plenty of room for advancement into management. Remembering that makes it a little easier to get through your shift.

Cons

This is a great job for younger people who are satisfied with busting their rears for $11.00 an hour at 3:00 AM and want UPS to pay their college tuition. Go for it...I'm all for that. Very, very smart move. HOWEVER: The Teamsters Union, (which you will be required to join and pay dues to with zero benefits until after one year) acknowledge that part-time package handlers are currently working in "part-time poverty" conditions. (They are currently trying to negotiate an hourly raise to $15.00 for part-timers. They openly say if fast-food workers can earn $15.00 an hour, people schlepping thousands of pounds of packages an hour should earn the same. ) There are no breaks (and I mean...NONE) unless you go to the bathroom. If you do sit down, even for a moment just to change packing tape, you are chastised. Plan to arrive at work, do some stretching, and then move non-stop for at least 4 hours...throwing and lifting packages and bags 50-70 pounds as fast as possible. You will be sweating. You will be drinking a lot of water. You will be very hot. You will be judged on speed. This is incredibly, incredibly hard work. Expect to move at least 50k packages each day, and if you're not in shape...you will either be ready to kill yourself, or quit after a couple of days. Bottom line...I have had some pretty sucky jobs in my life...this one absolutely takes the cake. That said...there are other jobs out there...and UPS is a great company...if you can suck it up and stick it out.

Pros

Pay, benefits, job security, lifelong friends. Because you come into contact with so many different people, you learn a lot about them and yourself. Being a Union member allows you to concentrate on the job at hand, every day. Every cent I was paid was earned. The job may get easier, but it is never easy.

Cons

The mistrust between Management and Union members is real even though the goals of each are basically the same. No protection for Management employees results in a lot of back stabbing and undermining for all employees.

Pros

Benefits are substantial and hours are not long. If you are willing to stay in it for the long run it will pay off.

Cons

Physically demanding and needs to be taken seriously . Most people do not last more than a year or two.
