Pros

Very good advancement opportunities if you have a college degree with 24 business credit hours. I made from GS-7 to GS-11 in 3 years with the PaCE program. Flexible schedule with telework 3 days a week available after 3 months.

Cons

Getting a GS-12 is difficult if you do not want to be a Supervisor.

Pros

On-site child day care is affordable and convenient. Fitness program allows up to 3 hours per week admin time for workouts at the onsite gym. Cafeteria has good menu, but expensive.

Cons

There is a troubling DLA trend of expanding the number of inexperienced mid-level GS-14 tier one supervisors. In the span of 4 years, I had 3 brand new inexperienced unqualified supervisors who were incompetent. In addition, they all assigned me entry level work even though I had been a highly regard professional with DLA for over 25 years. Two of the incompetent supervisors were hired from the outside and had no prior DLA background. The third one was a career burnout who had mental health issues from deployments to Iraq. Overall, my experiences during the last few years with DLA were absolutely awful. They treated me like a child and that caused a lot of resentment. And I wasn't alone. Many other coworkers also were mistreated and discriminated by incompetent mid-level supervisors. I would not recommend DLA as an employer whatsoever. DLA has a big problem with the way they select and hire GS-14 supervisors at Fort Belvoir.

Pros

-Competitive salary; good benefits -Very metric driven - some tasks tend to be very clear cut -Data availability - if the information you need to do your job is not easily available in any system, there are lots of people who can get it for you.

Cons

-There's too much emphasis on accountability to the point where you fear retaliation over being away from your desk for more than 2 minutes taking a quick phone call or being 3 minutes late after coming from daycare in the morning. -Overly punitive mentality: some supervisors don't hesitate to write you up before even attempting to resolve small issues informally. -A surprisingly large number of teams still don't offer flexible work schedules and/or telework options, which rarely gets mentioned in the job offer. -No holiday or annual bonuses and very few opportunities to get recognized for good performance. -No communication between teams/divisions doing the same jobs. Zero collaboration. It's every man for himself.
