Pros

Promotion is almost guaranteed as long as you are in good physical shape, stay out of trouble, show respect, and do your job. Great job security - American will always need a military. Lots of prestige. Great team unit. Pay is on the low side of decent, but as long as you take advantage of the benefits that the Marine Corps offers, you can easily save a lot of your take-home pay.

Cons

Some of the higher ranks abuse their power and don't treat the lower ranks with proper fairness and respect. If you have any kind of problem with authority you probably won't do well. Long hours depending upon the unit you are with (aka your specific job title). Sometimes there is too much travel (back-to-back tours of Iraq). However, every job is unique within the Marine Corps so it's hard to make a blanket statement about the downsides.

Pros

If you buy into the system and understand that your sacrifices now will pay off later, you'll find the whole experience very rewarding. There are a lot cold, lonely and miserable nights which an wear on anyones psyche. You just have to keep the faith and remember why you chose to join. When you walk away from it, you will be amazed at how much you miss and cherish. It's an honor that very few people have and it's an honor that no one can take away from you. It's only four years, suck it up.

Cons

It takes you away from family and friends. It's not the regular 9-5, that you get to leave on Friday. It's a lifestyle choice that will invade every part of your life. It can be overwhelming at times. Oh, and there is that little part about going to places where people are trying to kill you.
