Pros

Salary, retirement, benefits, peer comraderie.

Cons

Local managers lack modern management training, believing they can ignore federal employment law, speak to employees like they are just recalcitrant inmates who have no legal rights...or even the right to timely payment. I was not issued a paycheck on a Friday. I was told they would check around, but it was a 3-day weekend, so call the next Tuesday to see if my check was in. The next Thursday, I called the main payroll dept on the east coast. They were beside themselves, horrified I had not been cut a local check...meaning, given postal money orders as a salary advance. They provided instruction for me to pass along to my supervisor, who refused to listen to me. I stopped him, told him that Federal law required the USPS ensure I was paid timely. He stated it was only 6 days late. I asked him if he would appreciate being dismissed by his supervisor if his pay was six days late. He yelled at me, saying I was being disrespectful and immature. I asked how stating facts and asking an uncomfortable question was disrespectful. I never saw him again after he said he wouldn't care. I spent eight full hours in the office on my day off waiting for three different managers try and figure out how to figure out how to pay me with money orders. At 5:30 p.m. they gave me a money order, and instructed me to go to the front counter to cash it...no comment...then the local postmaster's second-in-command told me she would have fired me for what I said earlier in the day, and that sort of mouthing off would not be tolerated. I do not lie when I say that all I did was attempt pass along information, and when told to not be anxious over my paycheck because it was only six days late, I asked a valid question. I NEVER raised my voice or mouthed off. The USPS is truly deficient in training management in modern employment practices or even Dept. of Labor rules and regs basics. I never returned. The pay wasnt enough to deal with ignorance and, frankly, stupidity, disguised as management.
