Pros

you have a job to go to work for

Cons

you don't get paid for vacations, holidays, sick leave and if you work Sundays, you get paid the same hourly rate as a regular day.

Pros

The U.S. Postal Service pays more than any other part time job with no work experience or advanced education required.

Cons

The U.S. Postal Service treatment, hours, and possibility of career conversion are the biggest downsides to the job. The new part time positions they are hiring for have virtually no benefits and your seniority means nothing but a list of who to convert first, in the event your installation ever does convert anyone. You pay union dues with next to no rights as a union member. Your work schedule as part of the new wave of non-career part time employees (PSE, MHA, CCA) is literally whenever they want you to come in. Which is entirely dependent on the time of the year and operation of your particular shift. 5 days a week 2 - 5 hours a day, or 6 days a week 12 hours a day. You have next to no excuse for not coming to work and your obligations outside of work are also your own problem. With such a varying schedule this job can be extremely inconvenient.

Pros

Pay is pretty good for a job that doesn't require a degree. I regret having used my GI Bill on a Masters Degree now that I work for USPS, but it will give me an edge should I want to move up. The regular carriers are mostly great, helpful, and knowledgeable. The work is easy for me, I get paid to hike! When you become a regular EVERYTHING changes for the better.

Cons

You will work a lot. I have gone 6 weeks without a day off. Been with USPS for almost 7 mos now and CCAs get run ragged. Double and triple casing, 1.5-2 hr pivots every day. Mgmt expects you to be done before 6 every day or PDI will come. Union steward grieves it and it goes away, but that doesn't make it right. Mgmt relies too heavily on ODL and CCAs to get work done during call offs and prime vaca time. If you have a family, forget about them, you'll never see them, save for the one Sunday off you get every 3 or 4 weeks. Culture is iffy-there is rampant harassment between the carriers-likely due to the workload and general atmosphere. It is all friendly, but sometimes offensive. You can complain, but mgmt issues PDI for harassment then union grieves it and it goes away.
