RCA Rural Mail Carrier

Pros

This job keeps you busy during the day. You go in, case your mail. pull it down and deliver it. Constantly on the go. You get a mix of indoor outdoor work with some exercise. Other mail carriers were very nice and helpful.

Cons

It can take 3,5 or 10 years to get full time. In the mean time you are expected to be available 6 days a week, even if you only are scheduled one day a week. You have to use your personal car on most routes and you do a lot of work on your car and spend a lot on repairs. You are paid an evaluated time. If you are new you can work 12 hours and get paid 8.

Pros

If you have the right expectations, working as a carrier for the USPS can be, well, if not rewarding, then acceptable. If you like being outdoors most of the day regardless of the weather you'll enjoy it. For the most part, when you leave after a day's work, you take none of it home with you.

Cons

Every office is different. The postmaster and carrier supervisors can make the job acceptable or they can make it hell. The starting pay at the USPS is not high -- in 2014, it's $15.30 per hour, regardless of where you live, with little or no benefits. There's no guarantee of being moved to a regular position.

Pros

Decent pay, length of work day depends on how fast you move

Cons

quasi government, do not receive all the benefits of other agency, seniority only acknowledged in the office you work in.
