Pros

Take lunch break when you wanted to... no one watching over you... your own supervisor when it came to dealing with the customers. My two direct coworkers were great to work with. Saturdays were the best days to work sorting mail. Pay was ok.

Cons

Way less pay for the same job as the permanent employees. No benefits, no opportunities for advancement, lack of work hours for PSE and temporary employees.. Worked part time since I was hired as a PSE ( postal Support Employee Clerk) which was a temporary job where they could lay you off or move you to different offices at any time without cause or notice. Did not get all of my needed training for the job. A lot of gossip, backstabbing, and jealousy among other employees (FT) who were mad at you working there because they wanted to work the overtime hours instead. The Manager was just terrible and often berated employees infront of customers and other coworkers and cussed people out at times. She was very unprofessional and was not open to ideas that would help to run the station or different departments better. Some harrassment from older male workers. Some FT employees had psychological problems and needed help and were still allowed to work there while everyone else was scared of them

Pros

The postal service at the very least comes close to providing a living wage -management and the coworker camaradre was encouraging. Getting fairly quick annual leave was nice compared to most any part time job. The APWU were very helpful and clearing up a grievance and help get me a transfer... go union! And the fact we were allowed to join and be represented by the APWU was a positive thing, despite all the flack unions get these days.

Cons

When I was a Processing and Distribution Clerk, unless it was at peak mail volume time, seldom would I get more than 25 hours a week. And during any holiday forget about anyone seeing their family. Most holidays would be spent into the wee hours of the morning. Along with this got frustrated (as most fellow PSE's) did with certain mid management, so after a year or so transfered to a smaller postal office, which went well. Again not a lot of hours or ability for advancement. Then I decided to get into the carrier craft at the same station which was okay at first during my first couple of months probation. I suppose my life (three kids under age 6) to work balance wasn't the greatest to keep up with some the demanding nature of the work. After having one month of probation I was transfered to a much larger and much less hands on management that were mostly inexperienced. On top of that the morale was at ground zero with Carriers doing 60 to 70 hour weeks... Bad news all around I was one of several let go with several more resigning around the same time.

Pros

Excellent pay all federal holidays, ample vacation and paid time which you can carry over and accumulate

Cons

Nights and weekends and holidays are required work for the majority of employees. Very often overtime is mandatory and it can be difficult to get time off.
