Pros

For rural and smaller urban areas pay and benefits are the best reason to work for USPS. For letter carriers, it is wonderful to be outdoors for most of the day.

Cons

The work is repetitive. Craft employees are expected to check their brains before entering the building. There is absolutely no room for innovation, dedication, or loyalty. Carriers are tracked by the minute, while upper management sip coffee and chat about vacations and kids. Managment goals shift dramatically and without rhyme or reason. Flavor-of-the-month approach to problems. Long-term planning is nill...or at least never shared with craft employees. The game seems to hinge on cooking the books; this quarter we worry about overtime, next quarter we'll worry about errors, then something else. Micromanagement at its worst.

Pros

The United States Postal Service is one of the most secure jobs to have. There are no layoffs and the pay and benefits are excellent. Opportunity for advancement is available to all that wish to apply themselves and be able to put in some hard work. Where I work there is open communication from Senior management through the direct reports. Teamwork is tantamount in my district and is fostered.

Cons

Lower pay scale than private industry, Unions and managements confrontational behavior is counter productive. Currently the lack of experience on the front lines (delivery units) is a concern. In certain Areas there is the appearance of cronyism.
