Decent pay and job security, but very demanding
Pros
- Better pay than most jobs in the area - Union protection and job security - Once regular, a fixed schedule and no shift swapping or being called in on off days - 11 paid holidays and sick leave in addition to PTO
Cons
- Unable to have PTO, benefits, or a fixed schedule until AFTER conversion to regular employee (depending on the role, anywhere between 6-24 months). - VERY physically demanding - Mandatory overtime frequently during fall and winter, especially on 2nd and 3rd shift - A lot of coworkers don't pull their weight, management has favorites and doesn't punish people equally or fire lazy people - HUGE deductions from paycheck so the 40+ hours a week even with shift differential is more like 35-40 hours at a less stressful job paying two dollars less an hour
