Pros

Everything I say here depends on what you want. What was a bad fit for me might be perfect for you. Good hourly rate, ($17.40/hour), lots of hours, "friendly" people so long as you do everything they want. If making money and working long days, 60+ hours/week, 13-20 days at a stretch through out the year is what you want right now, this is really a great deal. Fun, really, so long as the weather is good.

Cons

Scheduled 6 days a week on a route rated for 9.5 hours a day with no back up, (call in sick and you are asked to resign), then expected to come in for "Amazon Sunday" year round, then really step it up in December. Cronyism: a black acquaintance, (whose mother has worked at USPS for years), who was hired in 12/2013 somehow got his hired date altered to 3/2012 and cut in front of 5 people in line for consideration for the easier career position. This effectively took 5 years (or more) off his struggle period from Associate to Career position. Race & family is only mentioned to suggest possible motives for this. Other Cons could be listed.

Pros

The money's good of course , easy straight forward work ,I worked as a Processing Clerk . Different shifts but you don't get to pick which one you want . Most people are on the early morning shift which starts around 4am,5am, or 6am or the overnight shift which started at 9pm, or 10pm.

Cons

PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS, PLEASE! People that have been there for a while are IGNORANT ! they don't want to help you and they don't want you to help them . It takes about 2-3 years to become what they call it a 'craft career employee' and by that time you'll able to get your weekends off and you won't be demanded to do 12 hour shifts anymore. Around the second week of December to the end of January you will be working mandatory 12 hour shifts 6 or 7 days a week. Your back will hurt , your arms will hurt . Your whole body will hurt and you'll be tremendously tired . And you will not have any time for your family, doctors appointments , just LIFE in general . After the holiday time is over with you'll go back to working just 5 days a week with 2 days off back to back if your on the overnight shift or the early morning shift . The mid day shift which can start anywhere from 1pm,2pm,3pm,5pm,6pm and on the mid day shift You will always only have one day off , and it will be the same one off day every week . But as I said before , the money's GREAT!

Pros

Job Security, due to the American Postal Worker's Union that cares about its members. In return, my co workers and I care about getting mail out on time, despite the roadblocks in our way.. Mail Plant is climate controlled 24/7/365, a Safe and secure place to work. If you're over 40 and been "unjustly fired" by your previous employer, USPS doesn't hold that against you. You pass the 473E exam, show up on time, follow instructions from supervisors, work together with your co-workers, and good things will come of it. Pay and benefits commensurate with other jobs in the area. Towards the top of the pay scale if you don't have a college degree. Once you make Career, eventually you will have many options to choose from in various departments of USPS.

Cons

The constant struggle we face trying to deliver mail on time. Mail Plant closings and consolidations have actually been proven to be more costly than prior to Bush's Postal Reform act of 2006. Even Congressional members are starting to see the facade this bill has perpetrated trying to pave the way for privatization of the mail by making us look like were slacking off in our duties. Some would not like working 2nd or 3rd shift(I prefer it), so if daytime work is needed, City or Rural Carrier is the way to go or find a Post Office needing Window help. Life as a PSE prior to conversion is tough, working weird hours and days and needing to be available on short notice, rarely getting the same day or days off each week, much less working the same hours from week to week
