Pros

getting to know the people and serving them is the best part of the job. developing a trust with our customers and being able to serve them in this special way is such a blessing. nothing makes me happier than when i deliver a package or letter that they were hoping to get and seeing how happy they are to receive it.

Cons

making carrier was hard for me. i spent 15 years as a rca mostly as an aux. carrier on a route that should have made full time status. i would build it up only to have mail count knock it back down. upper management is taking all the credit for what clerks and carriers do and all the compensation. while our pay is fair the job is hard on a carrier's physical being working in all kinds of weather conditions and the ema really does not cover alot for what we have to put our vehicles though.

High pay, no benefits

Pros

work independently. I loved being in the office with my coworkers, we helped each other if needed, then I loved being out on the road by myself and listening to my radio as I drove from box to box.

Cons

no benefits, unless you became a career employee as others quit or retired. The hardest part of the job was not knowing how long each day would be, you worked until it was all delivered, and having to work every Saturday. You are classified as part time, but work six days a week. Our management was constantly changing.

Pros

It's a job Some co-workers are really great people (the only thing that made the job bearable)

Cons

The cons are seemingly endless: no benefits, takes 5+ years to make career, on-call every day, no set schedule, no set route, terrible managers who harass and micro-manage the carriers, laborious work, unions, have to use own vehicle sometimes, bad weather and roads in some areas, hostile patrons, hostile dogs, most mail is 'junk' anyway. Easily the most stressful job of my life. Christmas time finally did me in. A 65 hour week that had me near fainting from exhaustion and the manager found it amusing? DONE! The mental and physical toll was too much. And this is coming from a friendly hard working individual. The USPS is fated like the Titanic anyway. Proceed at your own career risk.
