Pros

I loved being a Data Conversion Operator. Easy job. Not too physically demanding.

Cons

I had perfect attendance for 3 years, surpassed my target goals, volunteered extra overtime during the pandemic and holidays, finally achieved career statis and was immediately transferred to a processing facility. When I arrived my first day, they said I was absent the prior two days. Apparently, the schedule I agreed to work was not the schedule I really had. I went into overtime my first day, a 12-hour shift. The next day I was disciplined for working 12 hours. They said that only career employees can work 12 hours and that PSEs (starting employees) are limited to 10 hours overtime. I told them I had been awarded career statis. They said I was wrong, that I was a starting employee. I asked if I had health benefits which, as a type 1 diabetic, I understood I had. I was told I did not have health benefits. Well, a type 1 diabetic without health insurance can't survive on the wage I was being paid. So, I quit. Two months later, they are sending me bills to pay for the health insurance they said I didn't have. I was really invested in continuing a long career with USPS, hence achieving my target goals and committing to perfect attendance for 3 years. This was a waste of effort. One of the biggest mistakes of my life.

Pros

Good pay, overtime after 40 hours, double time after 56 hours or after 10 hours in a day. Lots of hours and good benefits.

Cons

Management can be understanding in some offices and very unreasonable and dictator like in other offices. I had the latter. If there is no work in your home office you can be forced to go to another office to work. If they schedule you in another office the day before you have to drive your personal vehicle within 50 mile radius of your home office. With traffic this took me 1 hour and 20 minutes one way to an office i was frequently sent to only because the old postmaster at my home office had transferred there. The kind of politics you can run into at USPS. You do get paid mileage though but working at the USPS you will quickly value time over money if you have a personal life.

Pros

You do make great money about 2300 every two weeks People are nice Make mileage 82 cents a mile

Cons

Very long hours 14-18 hour days No days off when you do have one off likely you’ll have to come in They take advantage of you especially if you don’t know anything about how they run the PO. You start out using your own vehicle so get ready to mess up and convert your car You lose tons of time away from personal life like doctors or even taking time off is out of the question. EVEN for your children. It also takes years to move up. Managers don’t know what they are doing because of low staffing and turn over rate. Be prepared to never have breaks Also being a mail carrier you will most likely get attacked by a dog at some point. I was attacked and everyone at the office went on with their day like it wasn’t a big deal. YOU ARE TAKING A HUGE RISK WORKING FOR USPS. Unless you are a single man/woman with no responsibility but to take care of yourself this job isn’t for you.
