Working at USAA can be a harrowing experience for individuals grappling with disabilities or mental health conditions, as evidenced by my own troubling experience. Despite excelling at the core functions of my role as a Fraud Detection Specialist III, the intense work environment, coupled with a lack of understanding and accommodation for my severe, untreated Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and other mental health challenges, ultimately led to my termination on 05/24/2024. The fear of losing my job, which was already hanging by a thread due to being on a final warning, forced me to make the agonizing decision to miss a crucial medical appointment on 05/14/24 to determine if I had cancerous cells. Just two weeks after this heart-wrenching choice, sacrificing my health for the sake of employment, I was terminated, rendering my sacrifice meaningless. Furthermore, my ability to access timely psychiatric care for my ADHD was severely hindered by USAA's inflexible policies. My initial appointment following a mental health hospitalization in January 2024 had to be delayed until 05/08/24, as it could only be scheduled on my designated day off, Wednesday. Similarly, the next available appointment for ongoing psychiatric care was not until 06/19/24, again due to the constraint of having to schedule it on a Wednesday. Despite consistently declaring myself as disabled since November 16, 2021, and making USAA aware of my condition, the company failed to provide the necessary accommodations or support. This lack of accommodation not only exacerbated my struggles but also contributed to an environment where employees felt unsupported and overwhelmed, potentially leading to tragic consequences. The reported employee suicide on USAA's property in August 2023 serves as a sobering reminder of the immense toll that such a demanding and unsupportive work environment can take on individuals, particularly those dealing with mental health challenges. USAA's failure to accommodate and support its workforce, coupled with the intense pressure and rigid policies, created a toxic and detrimental environment that jeopardized the well-being of its employees. It is imperative that companies like USAA prioritize the health and welfare of their workforce, foster an inclusive and understanding culture, and provide the necessary accommodations to ensure that no employee is forced to choose between their job and their well-being or access to critical healthcare services.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
