Pros

USAA is constantly a top 3 Best Places to Work in IT; however I don't feel the criteria is specific to IT. I'd say they may have the best overall benefits as a company...but that doesn't mean they are the best place for IT employees. From a company, they have lax hours, big bonuses (but low compensation), and good health/401K/PTO. In IT they give you a desktop computer and a flip phone as of 2013. That's not what I would expect in the best place to work in IT. They have good customer service, but sometimes it surprises me how good it is after seeing under the covers.

Cons

As a top military/veteran recruiting company with military founders, there is obvious cultural impact of military values. No disrespect for the military, but in my opinion some military values conflict with business decisions. Individual success seems to be more time-based than effort-based; and team leads are put in place that don't know the basics of their business area. I don't think it's appropriate for a test lead to not know the basics of the testing life cycle while leading a team. If you are a 9-5 person looking for easy work, you can coast for a long time in a lower position. If you want to change things up and challenge yourself, make sure you are hired in as a director or above.
