Pros

Friendly coworkers, thoughtful and caring management, flexibility in the workplace. I enjoyed the insurance benefits. I was also able to publish a research paper with my team. In all it was great clinical experience.

Cons

Working with MDs and PhDs sometimes means little experience with supervising others, so communication and organization was sometimes poor.

Pros

Some of the faculty are really great people. Not sure that is a sufficient reason to do research here.

Cons

This institution is heavily weighed down by administration, who in general wield much power but aren't motivated to work efficiently since it is a state-run institution. Sadly, this is reflected in the quality of research compared to more influential institutions in the Texas Med. Center such as Baylor College of Medicine, Rice University, and Methodist Hospital. While there is a lot of great research going on here by faculty, administrative procedures and policies hinder efficiency and cross-institutional collaboration.

Pros

The health benefits are top-notch (though I hear that is changing due to budget constraints). Management is very sympathetic to leave-requests. There are regular opportunities for advancement (good in the short view).

Cons

Management appears to be untrained, formally. Budget cuts and "restructuring" are rampant throughout all departments. All non-essential "perks" have been done away with (ie. cell phone supplements, catered meetings, holiday parties, etc.) Pay raises have been halted for at least 3 years. Workloads are increasing steadily while resources are not.
