Thank you for taking the time to give your feedback. Umialik is proud of maintaining a supportive, healthy company culture that encourages our employees to take advantage of the company’s work-life balance. We believe a strong work-life balance is critical to the success of our teams and our business. We have a thoughtful and well-defined hiring policy. These policies include thoroughly reviewing the qualifications and self-awareness of the candidate in question, and promoting transparency in the hiring process, this allows for the employment of friends and relatives while avoiding the associated complex and operational issues. As an example, these policies prohibit one relative from supervising another and married couples from working together or overseeing one another’s work projects. We appreciate the opportunity to discuss your specific concerns with you, please contact Human Resources by stopping by or emailing us at HRmail@wnins.com.

Pros

Employee recognition-I have never worked for another company that has tried to make sure their employees know they are valued in what they do (spot perks like gift cards, bonuses at review for work well done (this is separate from a raise), and then if the company does well each year, we can get a bonus based on overall company performance. They also have a program that encourages employees and external partners to nominate coworkers and employees for a job well done that gets recognition from the CEO and your name in a drawing for a company prize at the end of each year. Employee engagement-They go above and beyond to make work life not so boring. They have a committee dedicated to engagement activities (ranging from a puzzle in the break room to First Friday games, treats and crafts, to Sips & Chips where employees get together after hours for drinks and snacks to just unwind and connect on a not work basis). Employee wellness-They have a committee that helps employees with work/life. They provide sessions on health and wellness for the company (ranging from cooking lessons to how to manage stress), to subsidizing a masseuse to come into the office once a month and provide chair massages at a reduced price for employees, to providing healthy snacks and drinks on site. Community-They have a committee dedicated to working to better the community we live and work in. This ranges from food drives for the food bank to assisting at Covenant House, to donating money to charities like Habitat for Humanity. They give every employee 8 hours of paid (yes, paid) volunteer hours each year so that each person can go help a charity dear to their hearts (these range from senior living facilities that need help, local equine assisted therapy groups that help disabled children and adults, to building with Habitat for Humanity). This not only makes the employees feel better that they get to help something they care about but it also provides a connection with the community personally and professionally. The office space is great. The cubicles situated around the office get nice views of Anchorage, you can take a break and watch Airforce jets take off while training, see beautiful sunsets on the mountain and occasionally you can see Denali/McKinley from the break room. Everyone is close but not so close as to feel crowded. There are vertical and horizontal employee teams (Underwriter, Associate, Rater then all the Underwriters, all the Associates and then all the Raters each have their own team) so that you always have support with what you need. Such as, if you go on PTO, your teams will assist in checking emails and your work flows so that it’s not all piling up while you are out. They have worked to expand Audits and Loss Control so they have dedicated staff that handle these areas so that the other teams are not trying to do multiple roles at once which can be overwhelming. I also genuinely like pretty much all of my coworkers, which is saying something for there being almost 55 of us across all the Anchorage departments. They all seem like good people that know their jobs and are willing to lend a hand if asked. Not just work wise but personally, too. I have had coworkers randomly offer to give me a ride if I ever needed to drop my vehicle off for routine maintenance or come ask me if I want to participate in an office lunch order or share their vacation pictures with me or their pet pictures/videos (most are animal lovers). Management truly seems to care about individual employees, providing training, mentoring and encouragement as well as connecting on a personal level. Engaging in knowing their workers, their families and what they care about. Overall, I feel that this is the best company I have worked for and it would something pretty serious to make me consider leaving.

Cons

Not everyone is at the same level of work ability/effort, which sometimes leads to some employees carrying more of the load than others to get the work done. We all know that not everyone can work at the same pace or understand the material as well as others, but for basic tasks and procedures, everyone should be on the same page and put in the same effort, not leaving messy things for others to handle because they do not understand what needs to be done, especially when there are many resources to help. Management tries to balance out the book and assign it evenly to teams but even then, some clients are more demanding than others or there are just really busy times in the year and if not everyone is pulling their weight the same, work is moved around and those that might barely be keeping their head above water are then left trying to right the boat when they are already working their best to keep everything afloat. It is understandable that the business partner and clients are #1 priority, do what we must to make sure they get what they need, but everyone internally needs to then make sure they can hold their own to make it equitable. Adding staff to spread the work out more helps, but the existing staff should be held accountable for their work and keeping on top of it, so others are not picking up the slack. There is not one consistent way of procedures. Example: There is a company made page for endorsement instructions. During training we are told to use this for any endorsements we make instructions for. Then when rubber meets the road, that is not used, and employees just make notes on emails from business partners and use that as instructions. It can be messy and confusing and just looks unprofessional. A similar situation on how things are filed. It makes sense that newer items would be on top, older on bottom, and yet half the staff does it this way, half the staff will have the oldest on top and the newest on bottom (or better yet, mix old and new together so trying to figure out the true timeline is a mess). It would be nice if management or a dedicated person could put procedures in place like this and make all employees adhere to them so that no matter what account you are in, it is all the same and you know where to find everything. It is understandable that with so many employees, this can be difficult, and with some having been at the company for many years and have their set way of doing things, might make it hard to change it, but I think in the long run, everyone would benefit from this. It is a work hard, play hard mentality. They provide a lot of benefits to employees but in return, you are expected to put in the effort needed to keep on top of your workload (working late, working nights and on weekends if needed). Sometimes that is very difficult. Even with the cons listed, I feel that the pros outweigh them and still feel this is the best company I have worked for.
