UniSea....One of the Best in Alaska

Pros

Fanatical about worker health & safety Solid management Twelve hour shifts Management understands employees also have a life separate from UniSea HR has a backbone & are actively exercising it. Very nice accommodations Top notch Galley (cafeteria) worthy of gong into business for itself anywhere in the lower 48 and charging at least 10 bucks a plate Excellent, professional, friendly Safety/Security. The senior members of Safety are also EMTs who give a damn about their fellow employees well-being. Many, many employees have been there 15-20 years, even though they are _more_ than qualified to work and make more money somewhere else. Family friendly -- Unalaska/Dutch Harbor has the highest ranking school system in Alaska. Free professional laundry service Top of the line PPEs (boots, raingear etc) that are FREE every season...if they break...no questions asked replacement. Decent internet, albeit you must pay a lot more for it than other places, but still, not bad for an island near the tip of the Aleutian Island chain (800 miles to Siberia, 750 to Anchorage by flying tin-can.) Nice library, rec room & movie/TV room. Culturally diverse....very diverse..a lot of opportunity to get to know people from places you only barely knew existed. Finally...Dutch Harbor is a fantastic place to visit, work/live. There are two decent grocery stores there...AK Ship Supply & Safeway (sadly...no pharmacy on the island...for this you need mail order.)

Cons

Considering how well UniSea is doing in terms of financials...perhaps they should consider paying more.
