Pros

Pay is fantastic. 24 years old making almost $80k/year + bonuses.

Cons

As I was a manager (MYO), Upper management is very incompetent, does not care about your "time off" or life. If you are an "A-hole" then you are fit for this job. I have respect for the people that worked for me (conductors and engineers) in Denver, CO and the feeling was mutual. I saved the company millions of dollars, worked 70+ hrs a WEEK, all during the night time, and they decided to fire me for no apparent reason. They don't listen to me, they don't care about me. I'm the "nice guy" type or personality, hard working, very dedicated.......but the company doesn't care.

Pros

When you are working, you are making around 20 per hour and up. It's all about making money. And many times you can pull down some really good money.

Cons

You work in the heat, rain and snow. You are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year. If you are a new hire, which could mean only being on board in the last couple of year, chances are you will be laid off for unknown stretches when freight traffic slows.

Pros

Great Pay and benefits, although pay can very greatly from one work location to another. This is a unique craft, that has a future without fear of being out-sourced. Developing skill and ability in this field gives one a sense of personal satisfaction, and pride.

Cons

Many young managers are fresh out of college and have no hands on experience doing railroad work that they have to evaluate and supervise. Railroading is quite unique. Rules are often harshly enforced without the application of common sense. Many work rules are far too detailed, and can change frequently. Some management can seem to view the rank and file as the enemy. All of this can vary from one work site to another. Personal time is often rare, and a great deal of time is spent away from home.
