Clueless Management, Toxic Environment

Pros

They deposit your paycheck on time each month.

Cons

Where to start? Management is completely clueless and while they say that they have a strategy, they really have no idea what they are doing. They are stuck scrambling through any means necessary to try and meet the Street's expectations and to save their jobs. Just 5+ years ago they touted the ability to move up the ranks and grow your career, when all that has happened is the removal of positions when promotion opportunities arise. They have archaic and ineffective employee review processes, and are completely unable to identify good employees vs poor employees. Be prepared to just remain at "average" or "below average" ratings and raises, no matter the effort to put in. I wish the best of luck to anyone that wants to work in this toxic environment.

Great company but lacks culture.

Pros

The company has a great pool of talent. The corporate building is very organized. UP leverages good technology as a tool to employees.

Cons

Benefits are getting worse as new employees will not get pension. Culture is deteriorating and leadership does not know how to embrace talent. Many people left because they wonder if the next turn of lay-offs will impact them or not.

Pros

There are no pro’s. Go to a different railroad. In fact, that’s what I was told when I went to upper management with an idea that could potentially save the company millions of dollars system wide. “take it to another railroad.”

Cons

You are treated like crap from the word go. From the moment you’re hired, they’re trying to fire you. If you think I’m exaggerating, look up what “railroad job insurance” is. Beyond that, don’t expect any of your hard work to be noticed, but if you forget to dot an “i” be ready to lose your job. The company is so horribly mismanaged and micro managed it will make you wonder how in the heck they turn a profit. I’ve literally watched them waste 10’s of thousands of dollars to save a couple hundred. Don’t think that the union has your back. It is nothing but another company taking money out of your pay check. They’re more corrupt than most politicians! If you ever need help from a union rep, they will blow you off or just tell you it’s out of their hands.
