Pros

Good retirement, enjoyed the work, ok if you like shift work.

Cons

low pay for skilled crafts(significantly lower than industry average), very high medical benefit costs to employees, poor dental and vision plans, no company matching on retirement, no shift differential pay for working off shifts, long periods of time before gaining vacation weeks, little hope of having weekends off, plan on working years without holidays off, its very difficult to get time off and frowned upon to take time off without using vacation time, management is more interested in intimidating workers rather than help them be successful, management has unrealistic expectations and timelines of employees, supervisor do not give employees the chance to prove they can do their job properly before being questioned, employees get targeted by management and supervisors if doing their job negatively affects production, unions are weak and appear to be bought off by management and union officials that stand to protect individuals get targeted by management, unfair bargaining practices between unions and company- company claims economy is not good enough to give employees a pay scale and benefits package comparable to pay scales and benefits packages in the same skilled crafts outside of the railroad- and yet is claiming BILLIONS of dollars of profit every quarter and BILLIONS of dollars in tax breaks, company has no respect for the employee, only goal is to line the pockets of shareholders and corporate leaders

Pros

Not a whole lot of pros. If you have a family, the insurance is expensive. If you don't have a family, the insurance is expensive. You think the hiring salary sounds great? Well be prepared to lose some of it to the pension. Which you probably won't get because it's not a feasible business practice. Management is in place because they have been there the longest. Not that they know the most. If you keep your head down and stay busy, you'll be fine. Although you'll probably be switching responsibilities every 6 months because they seem to rotate employees all the time. And if you keep your head down you won't get laid off! So congrats on surviving!

Cons

Most of them I shared in the Pros section. Be prepared to not be able to move up in the company if you are in IT. They'll give you more responsibilities, and maybe a title change, but no pay raise or bonus increase. And the CEO's new mantra for IT is "Do more with less". Yeah. It's gonna be fun. I can't wait for more layoffs in another year or two.

Pros

There were a few good co-workers. There are A LOT of people there just to collect a paycheck. There are people who try to screw the company every day. Sleeping on the job is extremely common. It's not a bad place to work, but if you like staying busy and actually want a job you can use in the future, look somewhere else. I was an electrician in the diesel shop. You are going to work all the holidays, weekends and either midnight shift or second shift for years. If you get sick you'd be better off to go to work, otherwise you need a doctor's note saying you were sick. There are no sick days. I hope you enjoy ice fishing, you won't get a week off in the summer. As a new person your vacation will either be one days when you can find a spot on the vacation sheet. Or you can take a week in February. Forget a week in the summer. The pay is great, insurance is OK, union dues are fair. It may be different other places than North Platte. I hope it is. Working here has made me glad I quit and went to another job. I like working with people who work. Not people who complain that they are getting screwed but make over $30 an hour.

Cons

Lazy people drive me nuts. It's only 8 hours, 7 hours if you don't count the breaks. It wouldn't be tough to work for 7 hours.
