Pros

Great opportunities for graduate nurses or associate level nurses -- other hospital will not consider ADN's. Lots of $$$ and incentives to get more education. General is the smaller of the two hospitals which seems (to me) to be a more relaxed atmosphere. Hands down wonderful staff who genuinely cares about patient care. Most nurse managers are approachable. Charge nurses are incredible!! If you are a good team player & play nice with the other nurses, this is a good place for you!

Cons

Challenging hard work for the new grad. Not a moment to waste!! Upper level politics are no different than anywhere else. Too much time spent on charting patient care and not enough time to do patient care. Senior management is mostly out of touch with patient population, concerns and expectations. Some overly-scripted "patient satisfaction" attempts that do not work. Highly suggest becoming part of the committees/teams/councils to help direct the focus back to real patient satisfaction.

Pros

relatively attractive compensation, lots of growth, organization has a vision and sticks to it. staff are generally friendly and committed, and leadership means well.

Cons

growing bureaucracy, physician politics, antiquated facilities and infrastructure. Being a healthcare organization, there is the inevitable external turmoil that comes with that territory. Then there's the added component of being located in New York state, that never saw anything it couldn't try to ambiguously over-regulate and license.
