The United Way of the Bay Area is proud of the fact that both its CEO and its COO began their United Way careers as field level professional staff. Led by CEO Anne Wilson and COO Eric McDonnell, UWBA has continued to recognize its valued and talented staff at all levels of the organization by promoting when and where possible. It is equally proud of the fact that several of its senior leaders have been promoted from the ranks over the course of their United Way careers. During the last several years, there have been multiple promotions of staff in all parts of the organization and at all levels. As a small nonprofit organization, UWBA is often challenged with regard to creating advancement opportunities, but it is always thoughtful about how to improve its ability to to retain talented staff.

Pros

Access to many nonprofits, but relationship building is not valued.

Cons

Relationship building is not valued. No organizational vision. No focus on making a difference in the community. No value to outcomes. Organization only values revenue and PR. Not appreciative of hardworking, over qualified passionate staff. Management hinders passion and innovative staff when trying to meet the needs of the community. Senior management is not qualified. Organization and senior management does not value its partners, they simply use them and never intend to give back (one sided relationships). Salaries for lower level staff are disgraceful and Salaries for Senior staff are DISGUSTINGLY HIGH FOR A NONPROFIT (DONORS BEWARE). Executive/senior staff turnout lends for a very unstable and unfocused environment.

Pros

1. Thriving culture 2. Work/Life balance is a priority 3. Great benefits with generous days off and personal days. The future of United Way is brighter than it has ever been – we have the resources, we have the fresh ideas and we have the passion to cut poverty in half by 2020. I’m proud to be part of the UWBA family.

Cons

Very fast paced...must be able to effectively meet the demands of proficient time management.
