Pros

UWCA is one of the nation's leading United Way affiliates, raising nearly $40M for approximately 90 of Birmingham, Alabama's best-regarded partner agencies. Professionalism, fundraising acuity, low overhead, and polished messaging make UWCA a great place to begin a career in fundraising.

Cons

Pay is well below market value--at least that was the case when I was employed. I know people who persisted and now make more, but UWCA makes it difficult for a young person to stay on board, especially when those young people have direct access to agencies, donors, and corporate sponsors who are able to pay much more.

Pros

The impact it has on the community. The core values are ones to incorporate into everyday life. The mission of the organization is one to be proud to be a part of. Great benefit packages, great work life balance, great work environment.

Cons

Low wages, the work that is done doesn't equate to the pay. Sr. leadership makes substantial amount of money and receive bonuses but staff don't. When campaign season brings in millions of dollars, but your told there isn't enough to provide a raise for staff or certain staff will receive merit increase, or a one time "bonus". It is slight discouraging.

Pros

Global platform and industry game changer to make impact in communities everywhere. Great people and vision.

Cons

Since the organization is so large, things change quickly to meet the demands of the business. You have to be flexible and adaptable to those circumstances in order to succeed.
