Pros

Pay is okay and benefits are pretty good, but they've been cut back a lot in the past two years. Honestly, that's about it for pros.

Cons

There are so many cons to this place. The entire work environment is toxic with a capital T. This is not a normal academic place. There is no value placed on expertise or diverse opinions. Everything is top down micromanaged. I wouldn't be surprised if managers are reading e-mails and tracking our searches. There seems to be a constant assumption that employees aren't doing their work, which is why they don't want to support remote working even if all our work is done on the computer. Meanwhile, the president is constantly creating new schemes that are all about making money and not about what a college should be about - education. As soon as some new idea seems like it might not make money or get him notoriety, even if it is really sound educationally, he drops it, and all the employees who invested so much time and energy into the project are just forgotten or reassigned to some new scheme. The employees suffer, feeling untrusted, unappreciated, and disposable. The students suffer, getting a very subpar experience. Every day I hear their complaints. Sometimes they cry, sometimes they yell. But we have to keep lying to them. I am only keeping this job because of some personal family matters. Hopefully in a couple months I will be able to get out of this toxic place.

They only want everything, all the time.

Pros

Working with students and faculty was the highlight of the job. Most faculty self-selected as highly mission aligned and good life/profession fit. Before it was beaten to death by incompetence and unforced errors on behalf of leadership, the community vibe was lovely and unique.

Cons

Atrocious communication and leadership from current president and board as well as remaining deans/chiefs/vps. Contracts becoming increasingly restrictive, minimal to no increase in salary for expanding workload, calendar creep re: less and less time for scholarship and/or having a life. If you are seeking to make less than all benchmark institutions and value being treated poorly at the same time, this is the place for you.
