      So many changes

      Pros

      Pay is decent, company matching 401k, plenty of autonomy to do y our work independently.

      Cons

      The change of pace is so rapid that the culture can feel toxic and unstable at times. In my area, the joke was, if you take one day of PTO and come back the next day you may not know how to do your job because management changes direction and procedures daily. The health insurance is very expensive for employees. For myself and one child it would have cost almost $200.00 per pay period.

      Solid, conservative employer with good benefits and work environment

      Pros

      Benefits (PTO, health, etc.) are top-notch. I started right out of undergrad with 23 days of paid vacation time. Salaries are decent too, given that most of Unum's home offices are in small, less-expensive cities. People are generally very friendly. Unum is a team-oriented environment in which people are willing and eager to help you learn and grow. Not many ultra-competitive types who hog the spotlight to get ahead. Management is generally supportive of developing employees. Senior leadership doesn't just pay lip-service to this - they really mean it. Usually very accessible and down to earth. Interesting, varied work depending on which department you work in. Most of the time, work-life balance is great. Managers and leadership are committed to ensuring you get to use all of your PTO! Overall, Unum is a welcoming place to work. It's a large enough company (Fortune 500 with 9500 employees) that you can get a huge variety of work experiences and responsibilities, but it's not so large that you feel totally lost.

      Cons

      Unum is a large insurance company. It is not an exciting start-up and the culture tends to be quite conservative, which can rub some people the wrong way. Decisions are driven overwhelmingly by consensus, which can be a good thing, but can also slow down the process. There is a culture of hesitance around speaking up, whether it be to raise new ideas or raise concerns about ethics / workplace issues. Some departments (e.g. HR) have suffered from significant reorganizations/cuts in recent years and performance has suffered as a result. Proprietary technology platforms are mostly old and cumbersome. Certain times of year (e.g. year/quarter end), you can push 60 hours/week.

      Pros

      Earn PTO quickly. Salary is higher than other employers in the area, good reputation in the industry

      Cons

      Micro management, too many layers of processes, no loyalty to employees, yearly stress of layoffs in the Fall, seem to push workers out the door once they reach age 50, advancement is difficult
