Pros

Employee Benefits. Unum really takes care of their employees benefit wise.

Cons

Satellite offices cater to the sales reps and client managers only. If you do not hold either one of these positions do not expect any perks. Management really only cares about ancillary employees 4 times a year, which is at the end of each quarter when business is being submitted. Workloads can be extremely high, and management does little help to ease or delegate overflow. Hourly employees are expected to work long hours, and it is highly discourage by management to submit overtime. There is very limited opportunity for career growth at the satellite offices unless you want to move into sales. I have heard that employee satisfaction is much higher at the home office.

Pros

Good benefits, unmatched amount of time off, large focus on employee development

Cons

Pace of change too fast, changes are implemented before they are fully thought out, every 3-5 years layoffs are a concern, must play the office politics game to advance

Pros

Can learn a lot about the insurance industry at UNUM, fellow employees are supportive of other employees, even when they have their own heavy work loads.

Cons

UNUM drops on its ranking on the best places to work in Maine each year. UNUM for many years remained in the first or second place as best places to work for large companies in Maine, but has experienced a steady slide downwards on the list and now struggles to remain one the list. I spoke to HR at UNUM about this and they acknowledge that UNUM is struggling and is trying to manage its reviews the best it can. UNUM , like many big companies now, asks employees to manage very heavy volumes of work especially for the service areas and disability benefit payers. I have worked at UNUM for many years, and in my opinion, it is not as desirable a place to work as it was. Stress is a serious issue among the employees, but upper management, in my opinion is more interested in getting the highest production numbers it can from each employees, and hopes its employees will remain off stress disability.
