Toxic and stressful - it's all take and no give

Pros

If you live in Dorking, it's the prettiest of the out-of-town sites. Most people really are very nice, but that's in stark contrast to the Executive Committee and most of the HR department. I note that this theme has come up in several other reviews - great co-workers, but not great executive management.

Cons

Executive Committee and some senior management go on and on about the Unum values - integrity, caring, pride, courage, commitment and accountability, without displaying a shred of any of these traits. It is also a bit worrying how out-of-touch many of the more senior figures are, both technically and in soft skills. They'll tell you very earnestly that black is white and expect you to believe it.

Pros

The Dorking office building is amazing.

Cons

Please don’t join this company especially if there is the slightest chance of having any health or stress-related issues in your life. This company will not even think twice to bite you at a very vulnerable moment of your life. Also, there is a high trend in Unum to terminate contracts without even giving any warnings. Other than that in my experience, the management is incompetent and to save their face they will not mind putting anyone else under the bus. Lastly, there is no focus on adding new skills to employees. Unum is paying high commissions to recruiters to convince employees from other companies to join them based on my experience don’t join this company especially if you already have a well-established job. ………STAY AWAYYYYY FROM UNUM……

Very PR focused and political

Pros

Hybrid working and some very good people within teams. Health insurance and pension provided.

Cons

The company spends a lot of time focusing on achieving workplace awards, good PR and photo's. Being unwilling to take a photo was rarely well received. Leaders do not always understand the systems and the work involved in developing and maintaining these systems. As a result deadlines can be unrealistic. There is more focus on hitting the deadline than the quality of what is being delivered. Personally I always had the feeling of being excessively monitored at Unum.
