Pros

Helping students. That's about it.

Cons

Very political. Some faculty very competent, but all too often, senior faculty making decisions are incompetent. Financial woes resulted in incompetent BOT and administration unilaterally making (poor) decisions (small comfort that incompetent senior faculty are now suffering). Absolutely do not advise anyone taking a job at this place.

Pros

Loved the team. Ample parking around town.

Cons

It is with great sadness that we see the writing on the wall for this once-average institution. Instead of "Feathers Up," the motto should be "Do More With Less." Here you'll find a weird mix of employees who do the work of two or three people and others that do nothing at all. Is bad leadership to blame? Absolutely. But it's also... ~ Crippling debt ~ Rural campus setting ~ Lack of a cohesive marketing strategy ~ Low ratings everywhere ~ Poor reputation management ...that are contributing to the demise of UIU. What's out there? ~ BOTTOM 25% of Regional Midwest Universities (U.S. News & World Report) ~ 1.9 star Rating from employees (Glassdoor, 110+ reviews) ~ 1.9 star Rating from women (InHerSight, 130+ reviews) ~ F- Rating for Value (CollegeFactual Scorecard) ~ Multi-million dollar deficits for the last five years (IRS)

Pros

There are a few good apples among the rotting bushels. I went here for school, was a student worker, and then hired on in a full-time role. This is a similar trajectory to a lot of people who work for Upper Iowa. Classes are easy, instructors don’t care. You can get a degree with little effort, but be prepared to graduate with few job skills.

Cons

It's bad leadership, plain and simple. They delegate everything and throw their team under the bus when things don’t go well. VPs are "so busy" but somehow are constantly surprised by news from their direct reports because they're not on top of things. There are hires based on their last name or who they’re friends with, not on merit. This happens everywhere to an extent, but the problem at Upper Iowa is that the nepotism hires don’t know how to do their job. On second thought, maybe this is more comforting for THE BAD LEADERSHIP, because they also don’t know how to do their job.
