Absolute Disaster

Pros

Relaxed environment. Coworkers are top notch in every respect, I would have left long ago if not for them.

Cons

Constantly feels like we're on the brink of disaster, constantly worried if a new meeting means layoffs. Mounting tech debt and no plans to address them. Huge pressure to reduce costs beyond trimming the fat and well into ruining the roast.

Pros

- there's still smart, knowledgeable, generally great people around in tech/engineering - Unlimited PTO and paternity/maternity leave, though it's harder to feel confident your job will still be there when you return from either recently. - some of the other perks mentioned in other reviews such as snacks, or meal subsidies, or fun events have been mostly limited or eliminated due to budgets.

Cons

- Lack of input from leadership - Lack of vision or product - No honest communication about how the company was doing (even when you could tell things were getting bad...) - messy re-orgs every couple of months - I've seen great engineers get let go - Just in general no one feels like they have job security, even people on core teams that are already understaffed get let go - people overworking due to teams being understaffed - not keeping up with the market for salaries

Wasted Opportunity

Pros

In the golden days, Uptake felt exciting, an up and coming Google like company in the midwest. All the basics were there - nice office, lots of snacks, good WLB, direct managers who always made you put family first. Work was interesting and had purpose, felt like being on a mission for a worthwhile cause. Biggest pro of all was that I always felt the dumbest in the room - if they got one thing right, they were able to attract and hire very good talent.

Cons

Leadership, and no true direction killed the company. They had the concept, connections, and talent all there to be something special. But with constant penny pinching, pivots every two seconds, poorly handled layoffs, and leadership with little credibility, it's hard to imagine how Uptake can be a major player in the industry.
