Pros

Nothing. Would never recommend this place. If I had to pick a pro, maybe the hospital staff are okay in some of the hospitals, otherwise stay away of this company

Cons

The worst place to work. Nothing good to say about this job. Treatment in and out of the hospitals is horrible

Horrible pay, poor work/home balance, poor benefits, unfair treatment, not enough staff, overworked and stretched thin, high stress, inconsistent protocols

Pros

Professional manager Lunch was sometimes provided by one of the vets Friendly co workers who genuinely care about animals Access to a plethora of medical knowledge as well as hands on experience working with animals

Cons

My biggest downside of working at VCA was their Sunday shift. The hospital is closed but since they board animals, someone has to come walk them three times a day. When I started, I was assigned all three shifts. I would come in the morning at 7am, leave by ~8am. Come back at 12pm, walk them again and leave. Then I'd come back at 7 pm and walk them again, and clean the entire hospital. They called it deep cleaning. If you were lucky you had extra help. With a chain as big as VCA, they should be able to afford a cleaning agency that can come in and clean the hospital (mop and sweep). The corporate executives would visit and tell you what a great job you're doing but I always felt like they could be doing more for their employees instead of implementing budget cuts by making the staff do every possible thing. Granted I don't know the bookkeeping for VCA but it's absolutely silly to think that they can't afford at least the Sunday deep cleaning to be done by an agency when they have ~800 hospitals and ~60 labs across the country with long business hours. And you can't stay in the hospital after you're done with one of the shifts until the next. You have to clock out and leave.
